When we talk of Victorian Coats, the first thing that strikes our mind is the straight Regency silhouette for women with exaggerated skirts and sleeves, while the less volatile wasp waist and frock coat for men. The Victorian Era is symbolic to the reign of Queen Victoria, who ruled the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901. It was in her reign that the Victorian Coats came to be recognized as a possible fashion accessory.
If we take a closer look at the Victorian Coats, there is much detailing to be discussed, especially if we consider the designs of the early dresses. The 1836, Gigot sleeves, which we usually see in the covers of Charles Dickens or Georgette Heir novels, used collapsible sleeves that became much narrower with age but retained a restrictive seam line on the dropped shoulder. Similarly, the body hugging bodice for women was fairly tight around the waist and rather uncomfortable to wear.
The dresses for men were less fashionable and apart from the usual jackets and linen shirts, there was nothing much to be discussed. In the nineteenth century, the advent of neckties and scarves somehow managed to retain the lost valor of men’s fashion.
Victorian Coats for kids were a sight worth watching. It would be best to leave the description to the themes of Tom Sawyer, so that people who read this article have an instant picture in mind.
