What’s a good dog chew that will actually clean my dogs teeth?
I need a chew that will help clean my dogs teeth, but isn’t full of nasty, fatty ingredients and won’t have problems like “greenies” seem to have. She won’t let me brush her teeth and I can only afford to have her teeth cleaned once a year.
I take cotton scarves and tie different types of knots to make a rope or tie the scarf around my Shih Tzu’s toys. She spends her time untying the knots and at the same time it cleans her teeth. I also like any cotton or canvas chew toys (like Kong) and those knotted ropes…it acts like floss cleaning between her teeth. Be careful though, my Shih Tzu chews her toys to the point where she has swallowed strings from her ropes which may cause bowel obstruction. I prefer the scarves. Also, if your dog isn’t on dry dog food, try to switch her to that…canned/wet dog food gets stuck between her teeth and gums causing plaque and gum disease. That’s good if you are taking to her teeth cleaned once a year. I just brush Chloe’s teeth once a day. She wasn’t cooperative at all in the beginning, but I used treats/positive reinforcements, kept at it, and she still gives me a token struggle…but she knows it’s going to be done (No judgments).
